As we in Brooklyn turn our attention towards affecting CHANGE locally, Brooklyn for Barack teams up with Brown Memorial Baptist Church for a Public Advocate Candidates Forum. Moderated by the distinguished Jonathan Hicks, the event will present an exciting opportunity for community leaders, grassroots activists and the general public to hear from an impressive array of candidates. We encourage any and all to submit questions for consideration to info@brooklynforbarack.org by Thursday, July 23rd. In addition to a question and answer segment, the program will also include a brief overview of the Office of the Public Advocate.

Join us on June 6th for The Recession Survival Fair, which will be a non-partisan community service event to assist Brooklyn and New York City residents in tackling the challenges springing from the economic recession. Attendees will have free access to important information and professional help on a range of relevant topics, including healthcare, food and nutrition, job search, debt and personal finance, and tenants’ rights and foreclosure. All help will be provided free of charge, although participants will also be invited to offer their own expertise to the community in exchange.

Can’t get enough CHANGE? Good! The election was just the beginning. This campaign was not just about bringing change to Washington, but also about bringing it to Brooklyn. It is up to us to make the change real.

Join us on Sunday, February 8th when more than 65+ local non-profit organizations, charities and advocacy groups will come together for the first-ever “Continue the Change Service Fair.” Organized by Brooklyn for Barack and the Central Brooklyn Independent Democrats, the event will be part of an ongoing effort to harness the incredible energy sparked by the Obama campaign. Attendees will have an opportunity to speak with representatives of organizations that are offering concrete volunteer opportunities like writing, teaching, tutoring, filmmaking, phonebanking, mentoring, word processing, stocking food pantries, sewing clothes for survivors of domestic violence, working w/ animals, canvassing, gardening and farming, ushering at performances, photography, and job search mentoring.

There will also be a Make and Take arts table for kids and roundtable discussions on the following subjects: Local Environmental Activism, Using Technology to Monitor and Influence the Legislative Process, Health Care, Voting Rights, and Food Justice.

In an effort to encourage (read: bribe) you to help us get out the vote now through election night, we’ve teamed up with a bunch of local Brooklyn bars to spread the wealth with discount booze. We’re pleased to report that each of the bars listed below will be hosting watch parties on election night and have agreed to offer drink specials to volunteers (2-for-1 drinks at the very least, but some places are being even more generous, so ask the bartender what’s on tap for Obama).

We are now in the final hours before the election. Whether you’ve volunteered hundreds of times for the campaign or you just joined our email list, we need your help now.

The Obama campaign is trying something that has never been done before. The campaign will have all of its volunteers in battleground states going door-to-door to talk to voters in person. They will not make any reminder phone calls. Instead, the campaign has outsourced the calling program to blue states like New York. Every single reminder phone call to an Obama supporter in a battleground state like Pennsylvania or Ohio will come from a blue state like New York.

Repeat: Every single reminder phone call to an Obama supporter in a battleground state will come from a state like New York.

That means that we’re counting on you, Brooklyn, in a way that no Presidential campaign up to this point has. Those reminder phone calls are an essential part of the get out the vote operation in battleground states. We MUST make these phone calls, and every phone call that goes unmade hurts our chance to win this election. In these last days, we need to make literally millions of phone calls from New York.

Brooklyn alone is responsible for making close to a million calls.

We need 10,000 volunteers from Brooklyn to meet our call goal. So, we’ll need every single person on this email list to make a couple of hours sometime between now and 8 PM on Tuesday evening, get three or four friends together and come down to one of the following locations with your cell phones and chargers to make some reminder calls. The calls are very simple. You won’t be calling any undecided voters. You’ll just be calling supporters and reminding them to vote in the election on Tuesday.

And don’t forget: all phone bank volunteers get 2-for-1 drinks on election night!!!

We will be leaving from Brooklyn to canvass Philly voters from Saturday to Sunday (leaving Brooklyn at 8 a.m. Saturday, returning by 9 p.m. on Sunday). We will walk neighborhoods to remind Obama supporters to vote on election day, and to listen and speak to undecided voters about their concerns. No previous experience canvassing is needed, just your good spirit in supporting Obama. You will have a short training session in Philly when we arrive on Saturday. We will either share the cost of hotel rooms, or get supporter-provided housing. Attendees will also split the cost of gas and car rental. NE Philly is critical to this campaign. It is an area that went strong for Hillary, and many voters there have not yet come over to Obama/Biden. The Republicans think the area is winnable for them, and it just may be the place where PA is won or lost.

We will leave from NYC at 8am sharp. We’ll get an orientation in Philly at 10am, and knock on doors until 5pm. We will be back to NYC by 8:30pm. Transportation will be a combo of private cars and the Bolt Bus. Round trip costs should be $20-$30.

Road Trip to Ohio – Columbus Day Weekend (Canvass)

Ashland OH is a conservative town in central Ohio. There are some Obama supporters there, and many of the residents do not like McCain….they just don’t know enough about Barack. The progressive movement in town is undermined by the local paper and conservative university. I am looking for people who are interested in driving out (8 hours) or meeting there (it’s an hour from Columbus or Cleveland airports) and lending a hand to the Ohio campaign the weekend of the Columbus Day holiday. I’m encouraged that the town has had a larger Democratic response than they have ever had, but they need our help. We have a place to stay and we will be well fed. We can rent cars or a van, depending on how many people can go. We can drive out/back on different days to accommodate peoples’ work schedules. BK Women’s Weekend of Action

Now is the time to reach out to women voters and talk with them about Barack Obama and Joe Biden’s plans to make American families stronger, public education better and economic equality a reality for women in this country.

We’ll be going to NE Philly to register voters and talk to them about Barack Obama and Joe Biden.

Sept 20th will be a Women for Obama day statewide in PA. We in NY have so many fabulous men who are volunteering, we’re making it more inclusive – everyone is welcome to join, and help us convince voters that Obama is better for women, men, children, and everyone in between.
