There are some Obama supporters there, and many of the residents do not like McCain….they just don’t know enough about Barack. The progressive movement in town is undermined by the local paper and conservative university. I am looking for people who are interested in driving out (8 hours) or meeting there (it’s an hour from Columbus or Cleveland airports) and lending a hand to the Ohio campaign the weekend of the Columbus Day holiday. I’m encouraged that the town has had a larger Democratic response than they have ever had, but they need our help. We have a place to stay and we will be well fed. We can rent cars or a van, depending on how many people can go. We can drive out/back on different days to accommodate peoples’ work schedules. Please email me with your name/cellphone/neighborhood/whether you have a car or would need a ride so I can contact you.

Now is the time to reach out to women voters and talk with them about Barack Obama and Joe Biden’s plans to make American families stronger, public education better and economic equality a reality for women in this country.

This weekend in cities and towns across the nation, female Obama/Biden supporters are mobilizing to reach out to women voters in battleground states in the Womens Weekend of Action.

We have a number of events taking place across Brooklyn to mark this occasion. I hope you’ll be able to join us at one or more of the following:

Friday:

Come join us in Park Slope between 7 and 9pm making signs to send off our volunteers and rally on Sunday at City Hall Park:

http://my.barackobama.com/page/event/detail/gs5k23

Saturday:

We’ll be calling women in battleground states to tell them why we support Barack Obama and encourage them to do the same. Join us at Vanguard Independent Democrat Association in Bed-Stuy for phone banking from 10-2. Bring your cell phones!:

http://my.barackobama.com/page/event/detail/gs5k2z

Or, join the New York Campaign Team at the Teamsters Union on 14th St. in Manhattan for phone banking from 12 to 3:

http://my.barackobama.com/page/event/detail/gs5kfd

Sunday:

We’ll again be calling women in battleground states to them why we support Barack Obama. This time we’ll be making calls from 12 to 2:30. Bring your cell phones and laptops!:

http://my.barackobama.com/page/event/detail/gsxldy

Or, join the New York Campaign Team at the Teamsters Union on 14th St in Manhattan from 12 to 3:

http://my.barackobama.com/page/event/detail/gs5kkh

After making some calls, we’ll go over to City Hall Park for the “Stand up for Change Press Rally at 3 PM! This rally will showcase the board base of support of women for Senator Obama. Help us show a strong Brooklyn presence and hear from prominent women who support Barack Obama. We’ll bring signs from the sign making party on Friday:

http://my.barackobama.com/page/event/detail/gs5kk4.

If those events don’t work for you, it’s always easy to plan a grassroots phonebank in your community: gather a group of women in a quiet location, take out your cell phones and put those free weekend mins to use! Call PA and OH using the Neighbor to Neighbor (N2N) function at http://my.barackobama.com/n2n. And here’s an instructional video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tt9JKIIs9Sw.

We’re looking forward to seeing you!

Fired up for Philly? Block Party Voter-Registration Extravaganza!

UPDATE 8 PM Friday Aug. 29th. This trip is now closed. If you would like to be notified of future trips, please email Jeanne@brooklynforbarack.org. We will have trips going every weekend between now and the election.

On Aug. 28th, Senator Obama issued a nationwide call to all his supporters to go out and register voters. Let’s answer his call on Saturday, August 30th, and help kick off of the last big voter-registration push before the PA deadline. We will travel by MegaBus to Philly where we will meet up with our Field Organizer and hit the block parties of NW Philly to do voter registration. (If you have difficulty walking and would like to be at a stationary location, we can arrange that.)

If you have a car and prefer to drive, please let me know where you live, and how many passengers you could take with you. If we have enough interest, we will have cars going as well as the Megabus group.

If you would like to stay and work over the weekend, let me know ASAP and I will put you in touch with someone who can arrange supporter housing for you.

UPDATE: FRIDAY AUG. 29th:

The 9:45 Megabus is now sold out, and the cars we have going are full. You can take the 10:30 BoltBus from 34th Street and 8th Avenue to 30th Street in Philly (www.boltbus.com) with the second group of volunteers, who will all travel to the meetup location in Philly together.
Please book the 8:30 Megabus return (www.megabus.com) from Philly, so that we can all travel to the bus together from the area where we’ll be working.

As soon as you reserve these buses, please contact me IMMEDIATELY with your name and cell phone number.

SECOND UPDATE: The BoltBus is now sold out. The remaining option is the 10 am Chinatown bus: www.todaysbus.com. The Megabus return at 8:30 may still be available; if not, pick a Today’s Bus return that works for you. If you are going via Chinatown bus, I MUST HAVE YOUR NAME, CELL PHONE NUMBER, AND EMAIL so I can contact you with information about the meetup location in Philly.

Every four years, the Democratic Party assembles a “platform” that outlines the party’s position on a variety of issues. Traditionally, the platform is written by paid professionals and then presented to the American people. This year, instead, the Obama campaign is encouraging people to host and attend “Listening to America” meetings to develop this year’s Democratic Party Platform.

Here in New York the national campaign has chosen three larger events - July 22nd in Queens, July 23rd in Manhattan, and July 29th in Brooklyn - to film for inclusion in their presentation of the platform. Brooklyn for Barack will be helping to host the Brooklyn event.

Tuesday, July 29, 2008
4:30pm - 9:00pm
Medgar Evers College
Founders’ Auditorium, Bedford Building
1650 Bedford Avenue @ Crown Street
Subways: 2/3, Franklin and President Street.

This is your chance to share your views, ideas, and suggestions, or just to hear what your fellow New Yorkers think is important for New York and for the country. The results of these Platform Meetings will be incorporated into the formal process that culminates in the adoption of the platform at the Democratic Convention in August. A few participants may even be invited to appear and testify at the National Hearing and at the Convention.

To RSVP or submit a written statement prior to the event (strongly encouraged), or for more information about the Queens and Manhattan events, please go to:

http://www.nyobama.com/platform

Or feel free to contact us at info@brooklynforbarack.org with questions.

We registered voters at 7 events last week. The organizers of AfroPunk were gracious enough to offer us a table, and we registered voters at 5 days of the AfroPunk music festival. We also registered voters at the Grand Army Plaza Greenmarket, and the St. Marks (b/w Classon & Grand) Block Party (pictured).

I’ll be canvassing voters in Prospect Park during off-leash hours on Sunday morning. This is a great opportunity to talk to voters when they’re not rushing from one place to another. You should be a dog person to do this event, although there is no need to bring your own dog :). Prime time in the park is 7am-9am. Off-leash hours end at 9, but folks tend to hang around a little bit longer. If you can, bring your own clipboard. Also, wear clothes you don’t mind getting a few paw-prints on. I’ll have sign-up sheets and lit. PLEASE NOTE - IF IT IS RAINING OR SNOWING, WE WON’T GO. If you’re not sure if we’re out or not, call me at 917-354-2208. Experienced canvassers, first-timers, and everyone in between welcome!

Host: Matthew Haines
Location: Fulton Street Mall (at corner of Jay Street and Fulton Street, outside the subway station), Brooklyn, NY 11201
Let’s keep the momentum in Brooklyn going! Last Friday nearly 20 volunteers registered nearly 600 voters and I write this on the eve of a second event where 21 volunteers are ready to rally more support for Barack in Brooklyn.

OUR THIRD EVENT will take place at the Fulton Street Mall on Thursday, January 17th where we will

1.) Ask people to declare their support for Barack Obama by signing our sheet and possibly even offering to volunteer.
2.) Show voters what a presence and great, energetic vibe Barack Obama supporters have and generate!
3.) Sell Obama gear (buttons, shirts, posters, bracelets, etc) for donations.

In the last week and a half I have taken part in a bunch of Obama campaign events and every single time it has been a GREAT time. Lots of people have come out and volunteered for the campaign for their very first time, and they too have really enjoyed themselves. I hope you can join us too!

We are going to begin at 5PM (an hour earlier than normal) because there are a bunch of people who can arrive that early. However, if you can’t get there until later, don’t worry! Any amount of time is better than no time at all. We’ll finish up at 8PM and then promptly find a local bar to celebrate our good work at. :) If you have ANY questions, please don’t hesitate to call me at 631-513-3929. Bring friends and I look forward to seeing you on Thursday!

In the first in a series of neighborhood forums, we will tackle head-on the issues of religion and politics. We’ll talk about how we translate values rooted in our faith into universal principles, and what Barack Obama has added to this critical conversation.

These forums are a chance for people of any faith (or non-faith) to come together and discuss the role of religious values in public life. Barack often talks openly about both his own personal journey to his Christian faith and the uncertainties involved in religious belief.

Come and join in the discussion, or just listen and contemplate your own feelings on these issues. Whether you can make it or not, you can learn more about Barack—and how he translates his values into public discourse—by visiting faith.barackobama.com or by emailing us at faith@nyc4obama.com.

June 9th the day of the Walk for Change event is also my son Jah’s fifth birthday party. My love of country and family has presented me with a great opportunity to not only do something great for the cause and community on a whole but also teach my son a great and valuable lesson. So my plan is to set up a table where people can stop by pick up literature sign up to volunteer and just meet and exchange thoughts and ideas. Since I cant get out to the people and walk I’ll do my part by catching the high volume of people who’ll pass by our party on the corner of President St. and Franklin Ave. Franklin Ave. is a major artery in Crown Heights. If you live in the ‘hood stop by and say hi.
